Each breeding is carefully managed with progesterone timing to determine accurate breeding dates and ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. Old McDonald Bulldogs puppies are born and raised inside our home in a safe and clean environment where they are under watchful eye, exposed to a lot of human contact, and early socialization.  Puppies have their first veterinary wellness checkup at four weeks, my vet administers all shots and a wellness check is provided at each visit.  A final veterinary wellness visit and health certificate is provided prior to leaving for their new homes.  Puppies are micro-chipped for permanent identification using res, Pet Identification system.  Puppies are wormed routinely and vaccinations begin at 6 weeks of age. Puppies are available for adoption at nine weeks of age provided all puppies are on the same social and psychologically developed level.

How the female is tied down for the surgery
Every puppy goes to their new home with a "Puppy Guide".  Information on the English bulldog Breed Standard, puppy preparation, health and safety, training and obedience are provided for you on the Old McDonald Bulldogs (Know your MoJo) page. Health record and Health certificate from my veterinarian describing the puppy's medical history is included in the "Puppy Guide", as well as a copy of the Adoption Agreement, pictures of the litter from birth to nine weeks of age, pictures of parents and grandparents, three generation pedigree, individual registration application, and microchip registration.

How the female is tied down for the surgery
Early puppy socialization and obedience training is very important. This responsibility is not just the responsibility of the breeder but should be continued by the puppy’s new parents until at least a year of age. Continuing education and research is paramount to the improvement of this wonderful breed. As breeders, it is our responsibility to educate ourselves constantly, as well as educating potential English bulldog owners. AND, it is our responsibility to protect, preserve, and improve the breed!

How the female is tied down for the surgery

Breeding English Bulldogs can cost you the life of your beloved female as well as the entire litter. If the litter should survive without mom, few will live unless 24 hour care for three weeks is administered. If you are lucky enough to keep your female and her puppies, around the clock care for the first three weeks is highly recommended. Picking an exceptional male and female as described by the AKC standard is vital. If you can not commit to bettering the breed and total care of the puppies regardless of the scenario, DO NOT BREED!

I strongly encourage you to research the breed, familiarize yourself with the health of the English bulldog, and view our recommended sites before you begin your search for a puppy.  Give serious consideration to where and from whom you purchase a puppy from.

Scope Viewing the Short Palate

MoJo had a mucus cough, we had checked his lungs several times and they were as clear as a bell. It was believed by other breeders, he has a narrow esophagus. We had no experience concerning this kind of condition so we went in for a scope. This is an example of a normal palate. You are looking at the closure from top and bottom of the throat; a v shaped looking flap should close behind the upper portion. MoJo's V shaped flap does not meet up with the top of his mouth and leaves a small gap. This allowed for the mucus sounding cough. It has been advised to wait for surgery as he may out grow the condition. His esophagus measures 15 cm and his stenotic nares were beautiful! Great news considering we feared a collapsing or narrow trachea!

Cherry Eye

What you should look for when suspecting a cherry eye. A round, smooth, red mass will appear to bubble out of the puppies’ eye. This is indicative of a prolapsed gland of the third eyelid. Inflammation of the gland with swelling and redness may be present but usually the glad looks normal with a smooth, pink surface. If the gland remains prolapsed for an extended period (months to years), the gland may develop pigment. You can sometimes reposition the gland with gentle massaging but usually the gland remains prolapsed and even after using the massaging technique.

Before surgery your vet will do a tear test to help determine which surgical procedure will best suit your pup. Your vet will be looking to see if the tear production has decreased or if the patient has developed dry eye.

There are three basic surgical techniques these techniques are orbital rim anchoring; scleral anchoring; and the pocket method. The pocket method involves parallel incisions made on either side of the gland. The gland is then tucked into the pocket and sutured closed keeping the knot tie on the underside to avoid irritating the eye. Medications and eye drops will be prescribed and should be administered over the next two weeks followed with a routine check-up.

We selected the pocket method since dry eye in bulldogs is not uncommon and the pocket method is the least problematic. Below are examples of a cherry eye and the pocket method.
